The Crown and three Taranaki iwi groups have signed Agreements in Principle over Treaty claims totalling more than $200 million.

The Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations, Christopher Finlayson, says the Crown signed agreements in principle with Ngaruahine and Te Atiawa, and a letter of agreement with Taranaki iwi.

Mr Finlayson says the Taranaki region claims relate to breaches by the Crown that are some of the largest and most severe in New Zealand history, and include warfare, scorched earth tactics and imprisonment.

The redress packages include apologies and redress as well as $67.5 million for Ngaruahine, $87 million for Te Atiawa and $70 million for Taranaki iwi.

The agreements also include the vesting of culturally significant sites such as Sugar Loaf Islands to iwi.

Mr Finlayson says the parties will now negotiate on the basis of those agreements towards fully developed and detailed deeds of settlement.
