Police and iwi strategy predicted to save money

A Northland tribal leader predicts a new police and iwi strategy will save the country money.

The Turning of the Tide joint strategy aims to reduce the prosecution of Maori by a quarter by 2018.

In order to reach that goal, it's designed to use services of some iwi, Whanau Ora, as well as police changing the way they deal with tangata whenua.

Te Runanga o Te Rarawa chairperson, Haami Piripi, is adamant the strategy will be effective and will definitely change the way police deal with Maori.

He said the strategy will be cost effective.

Mr Piripi said arresting people isn't always the answer. Good policing is about teaching people what they're doing wrong and deterring them from doing it again.
