Govt seeks feedback on Maori Land Act proposals

6:52 pm on 3 April 2013

The Government is calling for feedback on recommendations that aim to improve rules over Maori land, potentially unlocking economic opportunities.

There is 1.42 million hectares of land that falls under Te Ture Whenua Maori Act, and up to 80% of that is underperforming or not developed.

A review panel has been looking at ways to improve the act, and has made a number of suggestions which include: land use decided by a majority of owners; support for owners to make decisions and resolve any disputes; and a reduction in the fragmentation of Maori land.

Associate Minister of Maori Affairs Chris Finlayson says it's important people have their say.

He says improvements to the act could be worth millions of dollars to Maori and the national economy.

Mr Finlayson says it would mean lands could also be freed up for such ventures as papa kainga or extended family homesteads.

A series of regional hui will be held during April and May, otherwise people can make written submissions by 17 May and send them to the Ministry of Maori Development, Te Puni Kokiri.
