Iwi wants charges against carver dropped

Two South Island Maori Trustboards have requested that charges be dropped against a carver accused of stealing snowflake pounamu.

Last year, Ngai Tahu artist Bevan Climo appeared in the Greymouth District Court accused of stealing tahutahi pounamu from his own iwi.

The Runanga of Ngai Tahu, along with Te Runanga o Makaawhio, has held a hui with Bevan Climo at Rehua Marae in Christchurch to resolve the dispute.

Mr Climo is affiliated to Ngai Tahu and Makaawhio on the South Island's West Coast.

As a result of the meeting, all three have issued a statement saying they have requested the charges against him be withdrawn.

They say it was one of a number of agreements reached during the hui.

Mr Climo and Paul Madgwick, the chair of Te Runanga o Makaawhio, say the hui had a positive outcome, and they look forward to working together to improve the ongoing management of pounamu.
