Call for Govt to resolve Kaingaroa Forest dispute

6:33 am on 17 June 2013

Bay of Plenty tribe Ngati Manawa says Government intervention might be needed to sort out an argument that's delaying the sub-division of Kaingaroa Forest.

Under a Treaty settlement in 2009, the Crown returned most of the forest to eight tribes, known as the Central North Island Forests Iwi Collective.

The hold-up centres on the tribes agreeing to share the woods according to mana whenua - the mana that tribes traditionally exercised over the land.

One of the eight tribes is Ngati Manawa: spokesperson Pem Bird said it could be time for fresh minds to sort out the dispute.

He said there might be a need for intervention from the Government or somebody all eight iwi respect.
