The broadcaster and entertainer standing for the Mana Party in the Ikaroa-Rawhiti race says the campaign is an extension of what he does best.

Te Hamua Nikora was in Wainuiomata, near Wellington, on Wednesday as part of his travels across the electorate to boost the party's profile.

He says he's used to promoting tino rangatiratanga and mana motuhake through his role as singer/songwriter and motivational speaker, and campaigning is the next step from that.

Mr Nikora says he's got a lot of support from the younger generation, who know him from the shows he's hosted on Maori Television.

He's hoping that familiarity will earn him their trust and encourage them to get to the polling booths on voting day next Saturday.

Six other candidates are running for the seat, which became vacant after the death of Labour MP Parekura Horomia in April.
