7:56 pm on 18 July 2013

Ngai Tahu says it's prepared to take on the job of commissioning agency for Whanau Ora under its new governance structure.

Three non-government organisations will be given responsibility for allocating tens of millions of taxpayers' dollars in Whanau Ora contracts from 2014.

The job will remain with Te Puni Kokiri till then.

The commissioning agencies will be set up in the North and South Islands, and one will be a Pacific agency.

The chief executive of He Oranga Pounamu, the health arm of Ngai Tahu, Donna Matahaere-Atariki, is glad the scheme is moving away from the Government.

She says people can't default back to the Crown to provide services a commission can.

Ms Matahaere-Atariki believes iwi will step up to the mark and do that, and says Ngai Tahu is well and truly ready to move in to that area.
