National Maori water rights hui at Turangawaewae

6:35 am on 22 August 2013

Waikato-Tainui is hosting a national hui on Maori water rights at Turangawaewae on Thursday.

The hui was called by the Maori King's representative, Tukoroirangi Morgan, as a follow-up to a national gathering organised by Kingi Tuheitia last year.

In October, nearly every iwi attended the meeting aimed at slowing the Government's plan to partly privatise state-owned hydro-power companies.

Since then, shares in Mighty River Power have been floated, and the Government intends to sell shares in two other companies, Meridian Energy and Genesis Energy.

Mr Morgan said Thursday's hui has a different focus.

He said the aim is to get an update from groups working to safeguard Maori interests in freshwater, including the Iwi Leaders Forum, and the Maori King's Working Group.
