Place name still up in the air for southern peak

The body that decides on place names has put off a decision over what to call a peak in Central Otago.

The 307m mountain so far has no name, and lies between the Remarkables Ranges and the Hector Mountains.

The Geographic Board received one proposal for the name of the peak - Te Karearea.

The board has also received proposals for three other landmarks - Lake Te Kohua, Mount Tuwhakaroria, and Tapuae o Uenuku/Hector Mountain range.

The Board is sending all four names to Land Information Minister Maurice Williamson for his views before it makes a final decision.

The minister's office says the names will be examined sometime over the next two months.
