Radio spectrum sold to mobile phone firms

Part Maori-owned mobile phone company, 2degrees, has successfully bid for a portion of the radio spectrum that will deliver faster broadband to handsets.

The business will pay just over $50 million for two lots of spectrum.

2degrees is 20% owned by Hautaki Limited, which is overseen by Te Huarahi Tika Trust.

Telecom and Vodafone have also secured some of the 700 megahertz band, both taking bigger slices and paying more.

Some Maori have taken spectrum claims to the Waitangi Tribunal, arguing that, as a Treaty partner, they should be given an allocation.

But the Government rejected the calls from the Maori Spectrum Coalition.

The valuable 700 megahertz band has been freed up following the switchover to digital television.

The Government says a small block of spectrum remains unsold.
