Tikanga scheme for Maori prisoners to change

8:10 am on 4 November 2013

The Corrections Department is making changes to its tikanga programme.

The scheme aims to reconnect Maori offenders with their tribal identity and motivate prisoners to rehabilitate themselves.

Over the years, there have been different approaches to the way the service has been delivered throughout the country.

Corrections has listened to feedback from Maori providers who run the scheme and the department's head of Maori, Neil Campbell, says the changes will mean Maori offenders are better looked after.

He says if programmes have content related to te reo, Corrections would be looking for links to other programmes or courses that would be available to prisoners through institutions such as Te Whare Wananga o Aotearoa.

Mr Campbell says the new tikanga programme will be launched next July.
