The Health Research Council is funding emerging Maori health researchers to the tune of $1.5 million as part of its 2014 Career Development Awards programme.

Ngapuhi doctor Jason Gurney, from the University of Otago, has received one of the major awards, the Eru Pomare Postdoctoral Fellowship.

Dr Gurney will use the $358,982 of funding to find out why Maori men have significantly higher rates of testicular cancer than non-Maori men.

Clinical psychiatrist Dr Hinemoa Elder, of Te Aupouri, Ngati Kuri, Te Rarawa and Ngapuhi, will receive $460,000 for her research on improving rehabilitation of young Maori who have sustained traumatic brain injury.

They are just two of the 12 health researchers who have been named as recipients of the council's Career Development Awards.
