Mr Cunliffe has been to Napier to meet with local iwi and the Hawke's Bay Chamber of Commerce.

He says his party has an excellent relationship with Ngati Kahungunu and it is growing every month.

Mr Cunliffe says Labour's extending its engagement with different iwi spokespeople of Ngati Kahungunu so it can gauge what matters are important to the tribe - such as the Ruataniwha Water Storage scheme.

He says other matters include the use of migrant labourers in the fruit picking industry, as well and looking at the freezing works sector, which needs change.
