National gives Maori Party the nod

7:52 pm on 21 January 2014

The National Party has indicated it wants the Maori Party by its side should it win the next general election.

Prime Minister John Key on Tuesday outlined who National would consider working with and said his preference was to continue working with current support partners parties the Maori Party, ACT and United Future.

Two Maori Party MPs hold ministerial positions outside Cabinet in the current Government.

Mr Key ruled out working with Mana, Labour and the Greens, saying they had no common ground with National.

However, Mr Key was prepared to negotiate with New Zealand First, and would consider the Conservative Party if it won any parliamentary seats.
