Student scholarships offered

8:19 am on 22 January 2014

Maori tertiary students who can trace their whakapapa to a World War One veteran are being encouraged to apply for scholarships.

The Maori Soldiers Trust gives out scholarships of $1000-$3000 for Maori from all iwi studying at any tertiary institution.

Funding comes from the Maori Soldiers Trust who, in 1952, bought the Hereheretau Station - a large sheep and beef farm in Hawke's Bay.

The farm sets aside some of its profits every year to fund scholarships, with $377,000 in the past 10 years allocated to Maori tertiary students.

Applications will be accepted until the end of April and are available through Te Tumu Paeroa - the new name for the Maori Trustee.

Preference is given, but not restricted, to those who can trace their whakapapa to Maori World War One veterans.
