Maori Wardens launch in Sydney

8:31 am on 25 February 2014

Maori Wardens have expanded their footprint across Australia.

The New South Wales branch of the Maori Wardens was established in Sydney this month, with support from the Victoria and Queensland Maori Wardens.

The non-profit organisation employs voluntary staff to work at community events and provides a number of services to the public such as security, crowd control, and traffic direction.

Maori Wardens are often seen at significant hui, including tangihanga or funerals, kapa haka festivals, and Waitangi Day celebrations.

The New South Wales Maori Wardens are being led by a Sydney-based committee and their chairman, Rawiri Iti.
