Maori fisheries hui to talk politics

8:32 pm on 25 February 2014

An upcoming Maori fisheries hui will explore how this year's election could benefit tribal business in the seafood sector.

The annual conference is being held in Auckland on 25 March, with a theme of Connecting Iwi and Energising Business.

Te Ohu Kaimoana - Maori Fisheries Trust chief executive Peter Douglas says it's about coming together and identifying how working together could help improve Maori fishing.

Politics plays a big part because iwi need to be aware of free trade agreements being established between New Zealand and other countries such as China, Mr Douglas says.

The conference may also canvas how iwi unity could influence iwi fishing quotas, which are portioned off to each iwi, as well as exposing delegates to new ideas.
