Tuhoe to open medical centres

8:10 am on 18 March 2014

Tuhoe aims to open four tribal medical centres before the end of the year.

The first centre, which is under construction, is near the tribe's headquarters in the Bay of Plenty township of Taneatua and is due to open in mid April.

Post settlement trust chair Tamati Kruger says it will include an administration office and a separate existing building which is being turned into three doctors' rooms. It will be for the Taneatua and Ruatoki communities.

Mr Kruger says they will be able to seek help from the doctors, while nurses will also be available to provide support to local people.

The doctors will also provide their services to communities at Te Waimana, Ruatahuna and Waikaremoana, where new medical centres are to be built by the end of the year.

The trust will employ one full-time and two part-time doctors to serve the community.
