The Northern District Cricket Association has formed the country's first Maori women's Twenty20 team.
It's a fast paced cricket game, with each side playing 20 overs.
The district's Maori co-ordinator Graeme Stewart said the team was set up a couple of month's ago partly because it was about time, and because the men's side had been doing well.
He said although the team hadn't trained together, most of them were experienced players.
Mr Stewart said their debut against a touring Pacific team would be exposure for them because the Cook Island national women's team was preparing to go to an International Cricket Council East Asia Pacific tournament in Japan this month.
He said the Maori and Cook Island teams game takes place this Sunday in Hamilton.
Mr Stewart said the team was captained by Sam Curtis, who was part of last year's White Ferns, which had both home and away services including the ICC World Twenty20.
