A Ngapuhi researcher and lecturer hopes an academic journal article in Maori - the first of its kind - will inspire others to submit pieces in Te Reo Rangatira.
Georgina Stewart, a lecturer at the University of Auckland, has written the article in Te Reo Maori for the New Zealand Journal of Educational Studies.
Titled Te take kahore ahau e tuhi rangahau ki te reo Maori, (The reason I don't write research in Maori), the article looks at the pros and cons of writing research in Te Reo.
Dr Stewart said the process of writing the article highlighted the importance of the Maori language to her, but also the difficulties she faced while writing it.
She believed the article is important as it acts like a signpost, and hoped it would encourage other Māori researchers to think about submitting articles this way.
Dr Stewart said it is also a chance for the journal to test its policies, as it does not seem that publishers have thought through the different systems and expertise they may need if they started getting more Te Reo articles.
