Several iwi are joining a pan-tribal hui against new oil drilling and mining.
Contingents from Northland, Bay of Plenty, the East Coast and Taranaki will attend the meeting in Auckland hosted by Greenpeace.
Other groups opposed to fossil fuel extraction in New Zealand have also been invited to the three-day event at Nga Whare Waatea Marae in Mangere from Friday.
Greenpeace national political advisor Mike Smith says it's difficult to fight alone as it's very easy for small hapu, land incorporation or whanau group to be picked off.
Greenpeace joined Te Whanau-a-Apanui earlier this year to protest against seismic surveying off East Cape by Brazilian oil giant Petrobras.
Mr Smith says the purpose of the hui is to work together to shift the Government away from what the envionmental group calls a fossil fuel-burning agenda.
The Ministry of Economic Development says that for oil, apart from the Taranaki Basin, the rest of New Zealand is severely under-explored.
Its Petroleum and Minerals division says it's already held one workshop with iwi aimed at improving its relationship with tribes, and plans to hold more meetings with Maori.
