Respected Maori GP dies

One of the country's oldest Maori general practitioners has died.

Doctor Tom Ellison, a respected Raglan GP, passed away on Sunday night after a short illness at the age of 75.

He was known as Doctor Tom to many generations of locals.

Dr Ellison awarded the Queen's Service Medal in 1981 for services to health.

His body was taken to Poihakena Marae on Wainui road in Raglan on Wednesday afternoon.

The ra nehu or funeral will be held on Thursday at 11am.
