Waikato-Tainui chair asks for hui to be postponed

7:04 pm on 23 September 2011

The chair of the Waikato-Tainui executive has called for the iwi's Parliament to postpone a scheduled meeting following the death of a great elder, Whatumoana Paki.

But the chair of Te Kauhanganui, or Parliament, Tania Martin, says the hui is still going ahead.

The Parliament is due to meet at Hopuhopu near Ngaruawaahia from 9am on Saturday.

With both chairs publicly disagreeing over other tribal matters, the head of the executive, Tukoroirangi Morgan, has asked a Tainui elder to act as a go-between to ask Tania Martin to reschedule the meeting.

He says the priority right now is the funeral for Mr Paki, a man who gave his life to serve the kingitanga and his people.

Mrs Martin says the half-yearly meeting is only going to conclude business raised in previous meetings.

Mr Morgan says part of that hui will look at whether to change some of the rules of the parliament's constitution.
