Election in way of Treaty talks, says Morgan

The chair of the executive of Waikato-Tainui says talks over its Treaty claim to recognise its ties to Auckland are unlikely to get far because of November's election.

Negotiations over the Tamaki Makaurau claim are continuing between the iwi and the Minister of Treaty Negotiations, Chris Finlayson.

The head of the tribe's parliament executive, Tukoroirangi Morgan, says the claim is to ensure his people's interests in places such as Manukau, Kawhia and Raglan are recognised.

He says it's unlikely, however, that an agreement in principle can be reached before the election on 26 November.

Mr Morgan guarantees his iwi will be back at the negotiation table after the new government is announced.
