New principal appointed to underperforming Maori school

7:30 am on 1 December 2011

The country's first Maori language immersion school has found a new principal, 15 months after a manager appointed by the Ministry of Education was to sent in to sort out problems at the kura.

Issues at Te Kura Kaupapa o Hoani Waititi have included teacher performance and staff not being able to manage behavioural problems among students.

Rawiri Wright will take on the role of principal at the west Auckland school from next year.

Mr Wright is already chairperson of Te Runanga Nui o Nga Kura Kaupapa Maori o Aotearoa - the body that supports, protects and gives direction to the development of kura kaupapa Maori.

The school has been temporarily run by a Ministry of Education Limited Statutory Manager, Toni Waho.

Mr Waho says he's confident the new principal will help him to turn the school around because the new appointee is experienced after working in several schools and with Maori teachers.

The last principal, Tipene Lemon, resigned last term because of illness.
