A 16-year-old Whangarei member of the Children Against Poverty group wants the Government to fulfil its obligation to improve the lives of children.
In 1993 New Zealand signed the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Its key principles are the right to life, no discrimination, to respect children and devote attention to their best interests.
Jazmine Heka from Whangarei Girls High School says the Government is failing to uphold its commitment.
She says about 200,000 children live in poverty, which means they don't have enough to eat, live in damp homes or don't have access to medical care.
Miss Heka says the Government needs to start including young people in talks to find ways to end child poverty.
