Education Minister Hekia Parata has announced a new college will replace two eastern Bay of Plenty Kawerau schools in 2013.

Kawerau Intermediate and the town's college will close, and the new secondary school for years seven to 13, will be set up on the current college site.

The Government's going to invest $6 million into the new school.

The Ministry of Education says an established Board of Trustees will be appointed next year and the Ministry will appoint a facilitator to guide the board.

It says both existing schools will close in January 2013, and its replacement will open in term one of that year.
