New Zealand's top pie is made at Jackson's Bakery & Cafe in Havelock North.

A chicken and vegetable pie from Neville Jackson, of Jackson's Bakery & Cafe, won the supreme award ahead of more than 3000 entries at the 12th annual pie awards in Auckland.

He also took home awards for the best bacon and egg pie, and the best seafood pie, along with bronzes in the mince and cheese pie category and gourmet meat pie category.

A judge described his pie as having an attractive appearance and contrasting texture.

Mr Jackson says the filling is important and partly credits his success to using fresh Hawke's Bay vegetables.

Oslers Bakery in Wairoa received a gold for its diced steak, vegetable and gravy offering.

Other awards went to bakeries in Auckland, Masterton, Christchurch and Tauranga.

The pie market is worth more than $120 million, compared with $89 million for the burger market.
