Hurricane-force winds cut power in the Auckland region

11:59 am on 27 August 2016

Just over 500 homes are still without power in the Auckland region after strong winds caused a cut affecting about 2600 overnight.

The lines company Vector said earlier nearly 2600 homes across the region were affected as feeder faults were causing localised power outages, but nearly 2000 were reconnected between 7am and 8am.

The largest fault was in Mahurangi, where more than 1000 houses are affected.

Another 840 are affected in Oratia near Glen Eden.

Vector said it was hoping to restore power for most areas by 8am.

MetService said the winds which peaked about midnight at 110km/h on Auckland Harbour Bridge.

The Fire Service said it had some weather-related callouts overnight, but nothing major.

Fire Service northern region shift manager Jaron Phillips said in the early hours fallen trees had blocked part of State Highway 2 at Pokeno in Waikato.

He said a tree was down in Ramarama, closing Kern Road, while at Narrow Neck on the North Shore a gum tree had collapsed on to a house, closing Hanlon Crescent.

In the southern half of the North Island, MetService posted a severe weather warning for gale-force winds out for the Tararua district and for Hawke's Bay south of Hastings, where it said winds could reach 130km/h in exposed places.
