More Nelson slips expected from forecast heavy rain

10:04 pm on 29 December 2011

Nelson-Tasman Civil Defence is bracing for further landslides in areas already hammered by unprecedented rainfall this month.

Forty homes remain uninhabitable and several roads are still closed after the heaviest rain in 50 years.

Torrential rain two weeks ago triggered dozens of slips throughout the region and forty homes remain uninhabitable.

MetService has issued a severe weather warning for the Nelson and Tasman districts, with up to 200 millimetres of rain expected in the coastal hills and ranges over the next day and a half.

It's warning rivers and streams could rise rapidly and potentially overflow.

Civil Defence controller Jim Frater earlier told Summer Report that although no formal evacuations were planned, residents living in areas recently damaged by slips should probably leave.

He said the emergency operations centre was ready to go if need be.

Mr Frater said Civil Defence is monitoring areas where there has been flood damage.

Road closures

Civil Defence in the Nelson-Tasman district closed a number of roads from 4pm on Thursday for 24 hours in preparation for a deluge of rain expected later on Thursday.

Civil Defence controller Jim Frater says Cable Bay Road, Iwa Road, and Moana Avenue are all now closed.

The Maitai Valley Road was going to close - but will now just be closely monitored by the police.

Mr Frater says Aniseed Valley Road is blocked to traffic, and people are being warned to stop walking and cycling on the road as well.

Meanwhile, the Department of Conservation is urging people not to take unnecessary risks in the Nelson-Tasman area.

DoC's acting Golden Bay area manager, Hans Stoffregen, says the area's key tracks are open but if the rain is heavy people should stay where they are.
