Pro-bailout party leads Greek opinion poll

3:45 pm on 1 June 2012

The pro-bailout New Democracy party in Greece is ahead of the SYRIZA party in the run-up to parliamentary elections that may decide whether the country remains in the euro.

An opinion poll shows support for ND at 24.5% versus 22.1% for SYRIZA, Reuters reports.

SYRIZA wants Greece to stay in the euro, but ditch the international bailout and austerity measures prescribed by the European Union and the IMF.

An election on 6 May divided parliament evenly between groups of parties that support and oppose austerity conditions attached to a rescue package worth 130 billion euro in March.

No party was able to form a workable coalition government.

Election day is 17 June.
