Brazil's novel approach to early release

8:19 pm on 26 June 2012

Brazil is about to offer inmates in its crowded prison system a novel way of shortening their sentences - four days less for every book they read.

Inmates in four prisons holding some of Brazil's most notorious criminals will be able to trim a maximum of 48 days off their sentence each year by reading up to 12 works of literature, philosophy or science and writing essays on them.

A panel will decide which inmates are eligible for the programme, which has been dubbed Redemption Through Reading.
