A botched attempt to restore a church fresco in Spain is proving to be a drawcard for tourists.

An elderly parishioner attempted to restore the painting of Jesus Christ in the Sanctuary of Mercy Church in the city of Zaragoza.

Church officials pledged to try to fix the painting, but hundreds of visitors have since arrived to see the restoration for themselves.

The ABC reports almost 18,000 people have also signed an online petition to halt a plan to return the painting to its pre-restoration state.
