Afghanistan heading for devastating crisis - report

12:38 pm on 8 October 2012

A report on Afghanistan has warned its government could collapse following the departure of NATO forces.

Independent non-governmental organisation International Crisis Group says Afghan police and army are not ready to take over security, the BBC reports.

The report warns Afghanistan is heading for a devastating political crisis, risking the collapse of its Western-backed government, and even civil war, after NATO forces withdraw in 2014.

Elections due that same year are set to be as fraudulent as the last, the group says, unless President Hamid Karzai does more to ensure a clean vote.

However it says the Afghan leader, who is not allowed to run again, may be trying to stack the deck for his favoured candidate - his brother being a possible option.
