The United States has sent an aircraft carrier and support ships through the South China Sea in a show of support for Vietnam, which is engaged in territorial disputes with China in the region.

The BBC reports Vietnamese officials were invited aboard the USS George Washington as it cruised off the coast of Vietnam.

Captain Gregory Fenton said the mission is aimed at improving relations with Vietnam and ensuring the US has free passage through the disputed waters.
