Fatal measles outbreak in Pakistan

More than 100 children have died of measles in Pakistan in January,

The World Health Organisation said on Wednesday that 63 of the 103 cases occurred in the southern province of Sindh, hit by severe flooding in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

WHO said most of the cases occurred between October and December in northern parts of Sindh, but was unable to provide a breakdown.

More than 300 children in Pakistan died of measles in 2012 and 64 in 2011, 28 of them in Sindh. A health ministry official has confirmed the figures.

WHO spokeswoman Maryam Yunus told AFP that a factor was malnourishment, particularly in flood affected districts.

AAP reports children under nine months are not eligible for a vaccine provided by WHO and UNICEF.
