Israel accused of destabilising Syria

President Bashar al-Assad of Syria has accused Israel of trying to destabilise the country by attacking a military research base outside Damascus last week.

Israeli jets bombed a convoy near the Lebanese border last week, apparently hitting weapons destined for Hizbollah. Syria says the target was a military research centre.

Mr Assad made the remarks about the attack in a meeting with Iran's national security council secretary, Saeed Jalili, in Damascus.

He says Damascus is able to confront "current threats and aggression" against it.

SANA news agency quoted Mr Jalili as reaffirming Tehran's "full support for the Syrian people ... facing the Zionist aggression, and its continued coordination to confront the conspiracies and foreign projects".

In Israel's first official comment on the incident, Defence Minister Ehud Barak said at the Munich Security Conference on Sunday that it shows Israel is serious about preventing the flow of heavy weapons into Lebanon.

''We don't think (Syria) should be allowed to bring advanced weapons systems into Lebanon," he told the meeting.

Hizbollah fought a war with Israel in 2006 which lasted 34 days.
