Pistorius shot girlfriend in bathroom, court told

South African athletics star Oscar Pistorius shot his girlfriend three times as she was in the bathroom at his home, prosecutors have told a court.

Details of the murder case against the Paralympian were disclosed during a bail hearing in Pretoria on Tuesday.

The 26-year-old defendant, who is expected to deny a charge of murder, wept as he heard the account, the BBC reports.

His girlfriend, South African model Reeva Steenkamp, 29, was shot dead on Thursday. The court appearance comes on the same day as her funeral in Port Elizabeth.

The prosecution says Ms Steenkamp arrived at the double amputee's luxury home on the outskirts of Pretoria with the expectation of spending the night with the accused.

They say she was shot three times while in the bathroom, about seven metres from the main bedroom.

The court was told that a passage links the bathroom and the bedroom and the door to the toilet was broken open from the outside. The prosecution inferred that the bathroom had been locked.

The court was told Oscar Pistrorius had said to a friend that he thought it was a burglar. The prosecution said it assumes this means that the shooting was pre-planned, because why would a burglar lock himself in the bathroom.

The prosecution says Mr Pistorius got up, put on his prosthesis, walked seven metres and fired his gun through the bathroom door, aiming for the basin. He shot four times and hit Ms Steenkamp three times, prosecutor Gerrie Nel told the court.

Pistorius' defence lawyer told the court his client did not know in advance who was behind the door.

He said the prosecution had provided "no evidence of premeditated murder", and that it was not even murder.

Oscar Pistorius was born without a fibula in both legs and had his legs amputated below the knee before his first birthday. He is known as the "blade runner" because of the carbon fibre prosthetic blades he wears for racing.

The multiple Paralympic champion competed in the Olympic and Paralympic Games at London last year.
