US special forces ordered to leave province

3:20 pm on 25 February 2013

Afghan President Hamid Karzai has ordered US special forces to leave strategically important Wardak province within two weeks over accusations of disappearances and torture.

A spokesperson for Mr Karzai says the measures are due to the actions of Afghans considered to be part of US special forces.

The BBC reports the province of Wardak has been the recent focus of counter-insurgency operations. Wardak is seen as a gateway for the Taliban to target Kabul.

A week ago, Mr Karzai banned Afghan forces from calling in foreign air strikes on residential areas.
