Fatal fire at Bangladesh clothing factory

6:11 pm on 9 May 2013

Police in Bangladesh say at least eight people have been killed in a fire at a clothes factory in the capital Dhaka.

The incident comes two weeks after the Rana Plaza building housing several clothing factories collapsed near Dhaka. On Thursday, officials confirmed that at least 892 people have died. Some 2437 people have been rescued.

The fire took place in the Mirpur industrial district overnight on Wednesday.

The BBC says reports suggested that a police officer and the owner of the factory were amongst those killed.

They were believed to be holding a meeting in the 11-storey building, which belongs to garment exporter Tung Hai Group, when the fire broke out.

"It was a big fire but we managed to confine it on one floor," Mahbubur Rahman, operations director of Bangladesh's fire service, told AFP.

The victims had suffocated after becoming overwhelmed by "toxic smoke from burnt acrylic clothing."

Most of the workers are believed to have already gone home when the blaze began.

Factories closed

Industrial safety in Bangladesh is under intense scrutiny following the collapse of the Rana Plaza on 24 April.

It is the country's worst industrial accident and has prompted the government to close 18 garment factories for safety reasons.

Textile minister Abdul Latif Siddique said 16 factories have been closed in Dhaka and two in Chittagong. He said more plants would be shut as part of strict new measures to ensure safety

The garment manufacturing industry employs about 4 million people in Bangladesh.
