India's telegram service closing down

10:25 pm on 14 July 2013

One of the world's last telegram services is shutting down on Sunday night.

India's state-run telecom company says it has decided to close its 163-year-old telegram service because it was losing billions of rupees each year.

It also says the use of telegrams has declined dramatically in recent years because of the proliferation of cellphones in India.

The BBC reports that hundreds of telegrams have been sent to protest about the closure of the service, which protesters say is still vital for millions of Indians who live in villages without an internet or cellphone signal.
