Blast at Argentine apartment building

12:11 pm on 7 August 2013

A blast in a residential building in the Argentine city of Rosario has killed at least five people and injured more than 50.

The BBC reports emergency teams on Tuesday were trying to put out a fire and rescue the people who remain trapped in the upper floors after a furnace exploded.

Rescue teams say there is a risk of the apartment block collapsing. Nearby buildings have also been affected.

Officials say the explosion was probably caused by a gas leak

Witnesses said the blast could be heard several kilometres away. The explosion happened just before 10am. The 10-storey building's facade was ripped off by the blast.

Rosario is Argentina's third largest city after Buenos Aires and Cordoba.
