Entertainer Rolf Harris has been charged with 13 child sex offences in England.

The Crown Prosecution Service said Harris, 83, will face nine charges of indecent assault related to two girls aged 14 and 15 in the 1980s and four charges of making indecent images of a child last year.

He will appear at Westminster Magistrates Court on 23 September.

Chief Crown prosecutor Alison Saunders said on Thursday in London the charges were part of Operation Yewtree, an investigation that began as an inquiry into the late BBC host Jimmy Savile.

The BBC reports Harris has been a fixture on TV screens in Britain for more than 40 years, since arriving from Australia in 1952.

In June 2012 he was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in the Queen's birthday honours list.
