ALP leadership candidate Bill Shorten wants to introduce quotas to boost the number of gay and lesbian politicians in the Australian parliament.
Mr Shorten has sent party members a manifesto that calls for the introduction of quotas for politicians representing minority groups.
He also wants to boost the number of female candidates to 40%.
The ABC reports the leadership contest between Mr Shorten and Anthony Albanese will be decided by a caucus vote as well as a nationwide ballot of party members.
The successful candidate will be announced on 13 October.
