Mt Etna erupts

4:23 pm on 27 October 2013

Europe's most active volcano Mount Etna has erupted, hurling lava into the air and sending a vast plume of smoke over the southern Italian island of Sicily.

The eruption did not cause any significant disruption, but airspace over Sicily was briefly closed.

The latest eruption was preceded by a series of underground tremors on Friday.

It is the 14th time Mount Etna has erupted this year.

The volcano is in almost constant activity, although the last major eruption was in 1992.
