Toronto mayor's official powers weakened

11:26 am on 16 November 2013

City councillors in Toronto, Canada, have passed two measures weakening the official powers of mayor Rob Ford.

Most councillors are frustrated by Mr Ford's refusal to step aside since he admitted last week to smoking crack cocaine.

Mr Ford has also admitted buying illegal drugs and drink driving. He also used obscene language on Thursday while denying sexual harassment claims. The mayor later apologised.

The BBC reports council members voted 39 to three on Friday to suspend the mayor's abilities to govern in an emergency, make appointments and control key committees.

Mr Ford says he will challenge the decisions in court.

On Thursday, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne suggested the provincial government may intervene, if called on to do so by Toronto city council.

But Mr Ford says he will not stand down and will run for re-election in October 2014.
