Independence date set by Scottish govt

3:29 pm on 24 November 2013

Scotland could be independent on 24 March, 2016, if voters back leaving the UK in an independence referendum.

The date is included in a White Paper issued by the Scottish government.

Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said it was a "landmark document" which has economic growth, jobs and fairness at its heart.

The BBC reports the White Paper will be available as a hard copy and as an e-book. It will be published on Tuesday.

An initial print run of 20,000 copies has been produced, but it will be made available to everyone who requests a copy.

The independence referendum will take place on 18 September next year.

The BBC reports 24 March is the anniversary of the Union of the Crowns in 1603.
