Fatal looting during police strike

Several cities in Argentina are in chaos after widespread looting during a police strike.

At least 10 people died inside stores which were being ransacked and hundreds more were injured after police left their posts, demanding a pay increase.

Seventeen of Argentina's 23 provinces have been affected. Police remain on strike In 10 provinces, while officers in another seven say they may have reached a deal.

The BBC reports the trouble began with a police walkout in Cordoba province last week which also led to lootings.

Cabinet chief Jorge Capitanich described the unrest as "treason" aimed at spreading fear and chaos on the eve of the 30th anniversary of Argentina's return to democracy on 10 December 1983.
