Jurors in the trial of two sisters accused of defrauding Nigella Lawson and her former husband Charles Saatchi, have been warned to ignore comments made by the prime minister about the celebrity cook.

Elisabetta and Francesca Grillo are accused of fraudulently spending £685,000 on credit cards belonging to Mr Saatchi.

Judge Robin Johnson told the five women and seven men in the jury on Thursday he had been shown reports about comments made by David Cameron about Ms Lawson.

He said it was "of regret" when public figures commented about someone involved in a trial. He urged them to decide the case based on the evidence in court.

Mr Cameron told the Spectator magazine he was for 'Team Nigella' and he was a massive fan of hers.

Elisabetta Grillo, 41, and her sister Francesca, 35, each deny a charge of committing fraud by using a company credit card for personal gain between 1 January, 2008, and 31 December.
