Veteran US comedian Jerry Lewis has been appointed an honourary member of the Order of Australia for his charity work for muscular dystrophy.

Lewis, 87, has been international patron of the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation of Australia since 2009.

AAP reports he has helped to raise more than $US2.6 billion through his long support of research into the disease since the 1950s.

The official citation says he's being recognised for service to the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation of Australia and for his longtime humanitarian contribution to those affected by the disorder.
